Nursing Home Bed Sores Attorney in Philadelphia

A Caring Team with Over 20 Years of Experience

Kanter, Bernstein & Kardon, P.C. is a firm that is small enough to give focus to each of our clients, but successful and experienced enough to fight for the results you want. We have reached rewarding settlements and verdicts, and while no lawyer can guarantee results in a specific case, this stands out as a testament to our dedication, particularly in complex matters such as bed sore cases.

Nursing home staff and the companies that operate them are legally obligated to provide an atmosphere that is physically and mentally safe. Unfortunately, the desire for monetary gain, poor management decisions, understaffing, inadequate training, or failure to oversee workers can lead to the neglect of their needs.

Our Philadelphia nursing home abuse lawyers at Kanter, Bernstein & Kardon, P.C. saw a need early on for checks and balances to provide proper care of people in Pennsylvania nursing homes. Two decades ago, when most firms turned away these cases, our firm began to prosecute them and since then have been on the cutting edge of holding nursing home companies accountable for the harm they cause.

What Causes Bed Sores?

Bed sores are open wounds caused by dead tissue. Elderly people tend to have thin, sensitive skin, and constant pressure can restrict blood flow to the skin tissues. Areas with hard bone, such as near the hip, elbow, knee, tailbone, or buttocks are commonly affected. When tissues die, they create a sore which burrows into the patient’s skin. If left untreated, these sores can reach down to the muscle and bone.

Patients that are immobile develop bedsores when they are left lying in one position for a long time. Knowledgeable nurses know that they need to rotate their patients frequently.

Bed sores also develop because of:

  • Unwashed sheets and blankets
  • Dirty clothes
  • Soiled and unchanged undergarments
  • A poor bathing routine
  • Too much time in one position in a wheelchair

The Devastating Consequences of a Bed Sore

One of the worst consequences of a late stage bed sore is required surgery. Elderly men and women are often too fragile for anesthesia, and invasive surgery may be too much for them to endure. Unfortunately, the affected area must be removed before dangerous infection sets in.

Some bed sores can turn into life-threatening infections which can ultimately lead to sepsis. Sepsis occurs when the chemicals that a body releases to fight an infection cause an inflammatory response. Inflammation throughout the body may target vital organs, causing them to fail. Sepsis can also develop into sepsis shock, a condition which results in plummeting blood pressure and may prove fatal. 215-568-5885
